The Gloucester Rangers Minor Hockey Association is taking a leadership role in player health by adopting CAPT, a new digital platform that assists with the identification and risk associated with concussions in sport.

Concussions are a serious public health issue across all sport in Canada. Early recognition, proper medical assessment, and appropriate management can make a significant difference in recovery. By adopting CAPT, a concussion management platform built by Ottawa-based company Agile Intelligent Solutions (AgileIS), the Gloucester Rangers are providing an innovative resource to help increase player safety.

“This is an important step in providing our volunteers and bench staff with the tools they need when responding to a concussion incident,” explains Kevin Carroll, President of the Gloucester Rangers Minor Hockey Association. “All of our teams (U9 to U18) will have access to the CAPT platform and will follow the concussion safety and return to play protocols.”

Concussions happen fast and without warning and can cause short and long term effects including headaches and problems with concentration, balance and memory. With the new CAPT system, when an incident occurs the information is immediately uploaded and recorded in the platform. From there, the parents/player, coach and other team officials will follow a comprehensive step-by-step process from evaluation and removal of activities to recovery and return to play.

“Concussions affect 1 in 10 youth athletes every year, “said Terry Kell, CEO of CAPT. “Our platform provides a more proactive approach to concussion management, ensuring every point of contact within an organization reacts correctly and in real-time when an incident occurs. If medical attention is required, parents and the player have access to the incident report with detailed information about the injury. Our hope is that this enhanced communication and action plan will help improve health outcomes for young athletes.”
