The Gloucester Rangers Major Atom AA season came to an abrupt end in March due to the COVID pandemic. That did not stop them from carrying out their major feat of sweeping past their competition and crowning themselves HEO Playoff champions for the 2019-2020 season.
The Rangers spotted a 17-13-4 record at the midway mark, and then steamrolled their way to the finish line, improving to a 25-5-6 record in the second half. The Rangers conquered the Taylor Hall Classic with a perfect 6-0 record in January and have not lost a game since January 18th. In playoff action, they swept the Kanata Blazers with 3 straight victories, and followed suit with second place Cumberland Grads in the semifinals.
This would set up the final showdown against the favored and top seeded Nepean Raiders. Although the games were close encounters (4-4, 6-4, 5-4), the Rangers were simply too resilient and never gave up no matter the score. In the final game, the Rangers were down 3-0 before staging an epic comeback with 5 third period goals, the eventual winner coming in the dying seconds of the game to cap a 5-4 victory. Armed with a commanding 5-1 lead in a first to 7 point series, and with a compelling playoff record of 8-0-1, the HEO declared the Gloucester Rangers outright winners and playoff champions. Although the players could not participate in an end of year party to celebrate their proud achievement, they will enjoy fond memories of their season that will last a lifetime… In these unprecedented times, this will undoubtedly be a season to remember…
