Minor Midget Gloucester Rangers AA win in Rochester!

January 14-16, 2012 - The bus departed on Friday and was leaving the city in unfavourable conditions (the bus was a good choice).  The ride took about 8 hours but all arrived safe and sound.  Game 1 was a  2-0 win as the Rangers looked to find their legs after the bus ride and late night arrival to their hotel.  Game 2 was another win 3-0 and the boys had the remainder of the day off.  They played a single game on Sunday and scored another victory 3-2 which put them into the semi finals on Monday Morning (Martin Luther King Jr. Day in the States).  The semi final game looked to be a rematch of game 3 vs McQuad, (a varsity team that does not play together often but a high school team that will enter tournaments outside of their district teams).  So far on the weekend McQuad was the best best competition for our Rangers so this semi final game was going to be a big one.  Ranger Coaches were impressed with their team's "defense first" approach to the weekend.  Forwards, defensemen and goaltenders were at the top of their defensive games and the goals against was a good indication of their efforts.  The Rangers were able to control most games including the semi final game and won a good battle 3-2   Now it was on to the final Monday afternoon with a rematch of game 1 (2-0 score) in which our boys were victorious.  The score in the final was 4-1. Coach Jim wanted to highlight the fact that the penalty killl went 100% over the weekend.

We are glad to hear that Liam N. was able to bounce back from a visit to Appleby's without affecting the team too much except for some anxious moments on the bench during game 3.  Andrew L. turned 16 over this weekend too. Happy Birthday Andrew! He celebrated with a goal and a 1 game suspension.  Sam had to make a trip to the hospital Saturday night to check out muscle spasm but he bounced back to finish the tournament.

It seemed to be a ladies weekend at this tournament as there were more moms on the bus than dads (no coincidence that the tournament took place in the US (where the dollar is worth more) but their did seem to be a few more bags coming home than going to Rochester).  A very successful weekend all-round.  Thanks to Carolyn, John/Charley, the coaching staff (Jim, Marc and Brian), the players and all the parents who took time off to help the boys experience a winning weekend.  This is a nice set up for our remaining season games and heading into the playoffs.

Gloucester Rangers Peewee A White Team Wins Gatineau Peewee Tournament!

The Gloucester Rangers Peewee A White team won the 43rd Edition of the Gatineau Peewee Tournament in early December.  The 16 team tournament featured 15 teams representing regions from across the province of Quebec as well as the Gloucester Rangers, the only out of province team.

Led by stingy defensive play and strong performances from the goaltending duo of Kyle Charette and Danick Gervais, the hardworking Rangers only allowed 4 goals in 5 games.  The Rangers kicked off the round robin portion of the tournament with a 4-2 win over the Richelieu Blizzards and followed that up later in the same day with a 4-1 win over Les Etoiles de Beauval. The following day they met the Elites, a team from the Candiac region and again the Rangers relied on solid team play but could not manage to beat the Elites goalie but did not concede any goals either and a tie was enough to send the Rangers off to the semi-finals.

In the semi-finals the Rangers faced off against the Federation Est, a strong defensive team which had allowed only 2 goals in the 3 round robin games. The boys from Gloucester were up to the challenge and determined to make it to the final later that day. They started out fast and kept that pace all game outshooting Federation Est 18 to10 to win the semi-final by a convincing score of 5-0.

The final was a showdown between the Rangers and Les Voisins de Papineau. Les Voisins opened up the scoring quickly, scoring a goal in the first minute of play. The Rangers came back hard and fired 16 shots on net in the first 2 periods but could not close the gap and went into the third period still trailing by one. They came out pumped in the third period and scored 8 seconds in on a shot by Shawn Beaton. They went on to pepper the Voisins goalie with 10 shots in the third period and were rewarded with goals from Alex Robert, Marc Brosseau and Brayden Last to win the championship game 4-1.

Congratulations to all the players on a great effort and to the goaltending duo for taking home the Top Goalie Award.

Gloucester Rangers Major Peewee A Green Claim the Pembroke Regional Silverstick Title!

The team went undefeated to claim the Pembroke Silver Stick Championship title. They posted three exciting wins over the Kingston Canadians (2-1), the Belleville Jr. Bills (5-1) and the Cobourg Jr. Cougars (3-1) prior to the tournament’s finale.

But the road to victory was not going to be easy. Through hard work and grit, the team had to triumph in overtime to win the semi finals and in double overtime in the final game to claim victories and declare themselves Silver Stick Regional champs.

Gloucester Rangers AA 99s repeat as champs at Markham Majors Fall Tournament

As reigning champs of the Markham Majors Fall Classic Hockey Tournament, the Gloucester Rangers Major Peewee AAs made the trek down Highway 401 in early October with one thing in mind: returning to Ottawa as repeat champions.

The Rangers had a strong performance in the round robin, winning three  games and losing one, with 22 goals for and three against. The Rangers’  potent offence, stellar defence and solid goaltending made the team  difficult to contend with. The only round-robin loss came in the second  game, when, despite outshooting the Rochester Alliance 38 to eight, the Rangers were defeated 2-1. This meant that the faith of the Rangers would be left in the hands of the other teams. It also meant that it would be
necessary to play three games in 12 hours the next day to become repeat champions.

In game 1 against the Lambton Jr. Sting, there was no scoring in the first period but the Rangers scored six goals in the second to score a convincing 8-0 win. Unfortunately, game two didn’t produce the same
results. Despite heavily outshooting the Rochester Alliance, the Rangers lost 2-1. Game three was against the Hamburg Hawks and was riddled with penalties as the Rangers handily beat the Hawks 7-0. Game 4 was another strong win as the Rangers outscored the North Central Predators, 6-1.

The Rangers started the quarter final against the Whitby Wildcats. The stellar defence, potent offence and strong goaltending was once again evident as the team had a convincing 4-0 win. The semi-final game was probably the highlight of the tournament as the Rangers beat the well-rested Peterborough Petes 3-1.

The Championship pitted the Rangers against the Huron Perth Lakers. The Lakers busted out of the gate and quickly gained a 2-0 lead. At the end of the first, it looked as though the fuel tanks were empty but the boys found the strength and determination to claw back and swing the momentum toward the Rangers. The Rangers tied the game in the second with a shot from the top of the circle from Mark Morrison. Then with 2:49 left in the third, Nick McHugh scored the winning goal, his second of the game, by driving to the net and poking it past the Lakers’ goaltender.

The Rangers overcame the adversity of being down by two goals and showed that, in the end, they were the better of the two teams and achieved their goal of repeating as the Champs.

Gloucester Rangers Minor Atom A White Team Wins Humberview Huskies Tournament!

The Gloucester Rangers Minor Atom A White team got off to a great season start after going undefeated to win the Humberview Huskies AA Invitational Tournament in Toronto on October 16th.

The Rangers posted four impressive wins over the West Mall Lighting (6-2), Humberview Huskies (10-0), Toronto Penguins (11-0) and Leaside Flames (4-1) prior to the tournament finale.

The jubilant team clinched the trophy after an intense, down-to-the-wire 2-1 victory over the Milton Winterhawks. After taking turns raising the "cup", rumour has it the players all drank from it before giving their coach, Chris Butler, a ceremonial water dousing......ah, the stuff that NHL dreams are made of!

Congratulations to tournament MVP Cameron Butler and the entire hardworking team whose 33 goals for and 4 goals against record is a true testimony of the team’s offensive, defensive, and net minding brilliance.

Team members include: Elijah Boisvert, Cameron Butler, Cole Byrne, Liam Cavan, Elio Dicorato, Alexandre Frechette, Owen Genier, Cooper Grochot, Kurtis Ikkers, Maxime Lacroix,  Jarrett Laduceur,  Luka Partington, Daniel Sabourin, Benjamin Sardana, Colin Stacey, Jaden Tejero, Jaden Tracey, Head Coach Chris Butler and Assistant Coaches Chris Sabourin, Mike Cavan and Yves Frechette.

Gloucester Rangers Minor Atom A Green – Whitby Thanksgiving Classic Minor Atom AA

The Minor Atom Rangers Green team did very well in the minor atom AA division of the Whitby Thanksgiving Classic which took place from October 7 to 10, 2011. In game 1 they beat the Humber Valley Sharks 8-6, game 2 lost 5-3 against the Barrie Colts who eventually won the Gold division of the tournament, game 3 beat the Ajax Knights 3-1 giving them a 2-1 record in the round robin which placed them 7th out of 14 teams and put them in the Silver division playoff round.

They played Humber Valley Sharks in the semi-finals of the silver division and beat them 6-5 in overtime. Unfortunately, they lost 5-3 against the Ottawa Silver Seven black team in the finals of the Silver division. Coach Mike was very proud of his kids when they were down 3-1 at the start of the 3rd period and they rallied back to tie the score and a late goal by them put them up 4-3, they scored what they thought was the tying goal, but it didn't count and Silver Seven scored an empty net goal to beat them 5-3 in the end.

Overall a great weekend with much to be proud of!

GLOUCESTER RANGERS MINOR BANTAM AA LEAGUE/PLAYOFF CHAMPIONS!

The Gloucester Rangers Minor Bantam AA team won the Eastern Ontario Minor Bantam League Championship on March 29 on home ice in front of a full arena of supporting fans. They beat the Rideau St-Lawrence Kings in the finals; 4 games to 1.

The team had an outstanding year. They finished in first place in the regular season with only 3 losses in 30 games, and led all league stats with Most Goals For and Least Goals Against with a +69 goals ratio. They participated in 4 out of town tournaments this season, winning the West-Ferris North Bay back in October. They were also semi-finalists at 2 other tournaments; the Toronto Penguins International and the Regional Silver Stick.

During the year, the team also had an un-precedent 23 game unbeaten streak which started in November and went right through to the playoffs. In the first round of the playoffs, the Rangers eliminated Ottawa Valley Silver Seven in a tight come from behind series to win in 5 games. This series was instrumental in the character of this Rangers team and was definitely the turning point of the playoffs. Silver Seven was the 8th seed and caught the Rangers off guard in the 2 first games. The Rangers had to come back from a 3 to 1 point deficit and rallied with 1 tie and 2 must wins in a row to clinch the series. The Kanata Blazers were the next opponent in round 2 and the Rangers were able to finish them off in 4 games, scoring 14 goals in the last 2 games of the series. The Rideau St-Lawrence Kings who finished in 4th place this season would meet up with the Rangers in the finals. With the expectation of many of bumps and bruises in this series, the team stuck to their plan and style of play just as they had all throughout the season, and in a tough physical final 7-point series, the Rangers skill and hard work prevailed, winning the Championship in 5 games.

Congratulations to all the players and coaching staff on an amazing season.
