To oversee our development program, Mike Pilon of Endeavour Sports Group has been hired by the Rangers to perform the crucial role of Coach Mentor. The Rangers years ago identified the need for consistency in teaching criteria, development strategies and the balance between technical and tactical instruction. Mike and his staff are mentors, teachers and colleagues to our coaches and meet with them regularly, providing hands-on teaching and observation as well as access to a full library of teaching tools and techniques. Their role is primarily to work with the coaches, offering advice, techniques, tips, constructive criticism, and objective evaluation. It should be noted that there is a national movement towards such a position and that the Rangers were among the first organizations in Canada to adopt a formal development program.

The Rangers program is putting the emphasis on development rather than just winning. The coaches in our program know that we are looking for consistency from year to year in what our players are learning so that they continue to develop. To ensure that this happens we have been working to put together a player development model to accompany the hard work we have done over the past few years to develop our coaching competency base. These development efforts combined we think will lead to even more success in the future both for our players and our coaches.

WHY BE A RANGER COACH?

Gloucester Rangers Minor Hockey is a well established, experienced and respected organization within the Ottawa District Minor Hockey Association. The Rangers are committed to following the mission statement of Hockey Canada, the governing body of hockey in Canada, “To lead, develop and promote positive hockey experiences.”

Rangers Coaches, who represent some of the most highly regarded Minor Hockey coaches anywhere in Eastern Ontario, are all recruited, screened, mentored and monitored to a much greater degree than local associations generally have the time or resources available to do. Being a part of our program provides access to first class professional mentoring services, regular coach development sessions and interactive exchanges with other Ranger coaches. The Rangers provide significant administrative support through the Ranger Executive and Board so that our coaches can focus on 'coaching'... we have a strong administrative infrastructure in place to make sure that the rest is taken care of!

We are a strong organization not only on the ice but off as well and we have the results to back us up! Over the last few years we have; graduated coaches to AAA and junior levels - five of our former coaches were appointed as head coaches to AAA teams for the 2009/10 season achieved post-season success - in 2007/08 we had three teams crowned league champions, in 2008-09 we had 2 crowned league champions and 2 league finalists and for several seasons now all of our teams have qualified for the playoff action.
